Salesforce Overtakes SAP as World’s Largest Enterprise Application Player

The Marc Benioff founded cloud CRM application firm Salesforce has dethroned SAP to become the world’s largest Enterprise application player. As per the Q2 fiscal 2023 earnings, Salesforce reported revenues of $ 7.72 billion as against SAP’s $7.52 billion for the same period.

“I’m a big fan of SAP and have a lot of respect for their business and what they’ve done in the market over the last 40, almost 50, years. And to see our business in July do more than they reported in June in terms of revenue, that was very meaningful to me and I’m very grateful and proud of our team for kind of hitting this tremendous level of scale,” said Benioff during the recent Q2 earnings call.

This speaks volumes about the growth potential of cloud applications and the fierce competition that is ensuing among these cloud players including Microsoft, AWS, Oracle and Google besides SAP and Salesforce.

It is worth noting that Salesforce is a cloud native company whereas SAP is primarily an on-premise enterprise software player that has of late started shifting towards cloud.

If we compare the stand alone cloud business of both the companies, SAP earned $3.13 billion in Q2 ended June 30 whereas Salesforce’s revenue form cloud business for the same period was $7.72 billion. The good part is the cloud business of all the players including Google, AWS, Microsoft besides SAP and Salesforce are on the rise on the back of massive adoption of cloud-based enterprise applications across business verticals.
